Please read this email I received this morning regarding the ever popular Brazilian Blowout Hair Treatment. It is so popular now i hear about it all day long.."Dear Heather,
Have you been keeping track of the "Brazilian Blowup," as we're calling it?
Last fall the Campaign for Safe Cosmetics helped break the story of the dangers of hair-straightening products like Brazilian Blowout. Product tests have revealed extremely high levels of formaldehyde, a cancer-causing chemical, in some Brazilian Blowout products (even those labeled "formaldehyde-free"), but the company insists its products are safe.
All the salon workers and clients who've reported acute reactions including nose bleeds, dizziness, rashes and hair loss might beg to differ.
Some federal and state agencies are listening to our concerns, though. This week the federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) issued a national hazard alert warning that popular hair straighteners may release formaldehyde (California, Oregon and Connecticut have all already issued warnings).
Canada pulled Brazilian Blowout off the market six months ago (followed by Ireland and France), but our federal agencies are just now getting around to warning people of the health risks. And there's still no action from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), the agency in charge of regulating cosmetics.
Please join us in asking the FDA to protect salon workers and customers from this unnecessary toxic exposure by issuing a voluntary recall! (Unfortunately, FDA doesn’t have the power to order a mandatory recall due to our outdated cosmetics laws.)
Then help raise the volume by posting a link to our action on your Facebook page, tweeting it or emailing it to your friends and family.
Sincerely,
Stacy, Lisa, Jamie, Mia, Marisa and all of us at the Campaign for Safe Cosmetics
P.S. For more on the dangers of keratin hair-straighteners, see Flat-Out Risky, a new report from Campaign for Safe Cosmetics partner Environmental Working Group."
What do you think of this? Do you feel that your local Salon or Spa should be offering such treatments? Why haven't more Salon professionals gone green? One thing I've noticed in this industry is they just don't know what is healthy and what is not. Its amazing to me that so many people in the skin and hair care business would not be more inquisitive as to what ingredients and the effects of those ingredients are causing to the health of their clients.
