Hand Crafted Lotion Benefits to Your Skin

Hand crafted lotion is a luxurious treat for your skin. It has many benefits over commercial lotions if made properly. Once you try it, you will be amazed at the difference it makes on your skin.

Artisan lotion consists of three basic ingredients necessary for it to come together: oil, water and an emulsifier. Carefully chosen oils and other skin nourishing ingredients are what makes each beneficial and unique.  As a lotion crafter myself, I have endless ideas for lotions… maybe too many!  (I come up with some pretty interesting and unique blends… some may even say there are a little weird?)  Anyway getting back to it.. the water phase could be made from distilled or purified water, Aloe Vera Juice or Floral Waters. The emulsifier most commonly used in making handmade lotion is emulsifying wax.

The benefits are endless!  If you take a look at the label of a commercial lotion found in a store, you may find it difficult to recognize the ingredients listed. A lot of the reason is because these products are mass produced by large companies who discovered that the consumer wants to buy ‘natural’ lotions.  Unfortunately for the consumer these products are far from good as they claim. (Remember always that the first ingredients listed are those in the highest quantity and so on down the line.)
With carefully chosen ingredients, the effects of hand crafted lotion are incredible. Rather than just sitting on the surface of your skin, they absorb into your skin, leaving it feeling soft, smooth and moisturized. You can definitely tell a difference when you use handmade lotion instead of commercial.  And what about the benefits for children?  If you do nothing else.. PLEASE use some healthy lotion on your kids.  Babies and small children especially should not be exposed to harmful chemicals and/or ingredients that do not absorb into the skin like mineral oil.  It’s like eating a processed hot dog vs. a healthy green salad.

Don’t let em fool ya~  Even though it is so important to purchase  good products, it’s important to purchase products from someone who knows what they are doing.  As a crafter myself I can tell you that the lotion I create is only as good as my handling process and sterilization of the equipment and containers are an absolute must. The bottle and cap that is used must be sterilized before the lotion goes into it, or you will introduce bacteria to the finished product. And contrary to what many believe, healthy preservatives are also a must.  A preservative is necessary anytime water (Aloe, Flower etc.) is introduced into a product in order to slow the growth of bacteria and mold. A beautifully created lotion with mold in it is not good for the skin!
